Sprinkler blow-out done with the right air, not the most air

A sprinkler blow-out pushes compressed air through the system zone by zone until the last of the water is gone, because water left underground in November is water that expands and splits pipe in January. Cary Sprinklers runs blow-outs across the Triangle every autumn, and the whole job takes well under an hour on a typical residential system.

The part most people get wrong is confusing pressure with volume. Clearing a lawn zone is a job for high air volume at low pressure — the compressor has to move enough air to carry water out of a hundred feet of lateral, not hit it hard. A pancake compressor from the garage delivers plenty of pressure and almost no volume, which is why DIY attempts leave water sitting in the low spots and, worse, blow the seals out of heads and valves that were perfectly fine in October. We cap pressure to protect your components and let volume do the work. Around here the first hard freeze usually lands in early to mid November, and Triangle winters bring repeated shallow freeze-thaw cycles rather than one long deep freeze — which is harder on irrigation, not easier, because every cycle works a crack a little wider.

We handle sprinkler blow-outs for homeowners in Cary, Raleigh, Apex, Morrisville, Holly Springs, Fuquay-Varina and throughout Wake County — part of our winterization and spring startup service.

What a proper sprinkler blow-out covers

Diagnosed right and fixed with genuine Hunter, Rain Bird & Toro parts.

Every zone, one at a time

We open one zone at a time and run it until the mist turns dry, then give it a moment and come back to it. Zones cleared in a single quick pass almost always hold water in the low spots.

Pressure capped for your parts

Air goes in at a pressure your heads, valves and fittings can take. Blowing a residential system at shop-compressor pressure is how people turn a seasonal service into a spring repair bill.

The backflow assembly drained

The above-ground brass is the most freeze-exposed part of the whole system. We drain it, open the test cocks to the right position and leave it able to shed any water that finds its way back in.

Low spots and long runs

Yards here are rarely flat. We work the downhill legs and the long back-lot runs last and longest, because that is where the water that ruins a system actually sits.

Drip and micro lines

Drip zones need far gentler treatment than turf zones and are easy to wreck with turf-zone settings. If you have beds on drip, we drop the pressure and clear them separately.

The controller put to bed

We set the controller to off or rain mode so it cannot fire a dry zone in a January thaw, and leave the clock powered so your programs survive the winter.

When to book your blow-out

  • Overnight lows are starting to touch the thirties
  • The forecast shows a first hard freeze inside two weeks
  • You have above-ground backflow brass, as most Triangle homes do
  • Last spring turned up a split pipe or a cracked assembly
  • Your system was installed this year and has never been winterized

How the work happens, step by step

No mystery, no runaround — here’s the order we work in.

Shut down and isolate

We close the irrigation supply at the main, relieve the pressure, and check the backflow and any manual drains before a single psi of air goes in.

Connect at the right point

Air goes in downstream of the backflow through the proper fitting, never through a hose bib adapter that puts air where it should not go.

Clear zone by zone

Each zone runs until the spray goes from water to mist to dry air, then gets a second pass after it has had time to weep. Slow beats forceful every time.

Drain, set and document

We drain the assembly, set the controller for winter, and tell you plainly what we saw — a weeping valve or a head sitting low is far cheaper to fix in November than in April.

Adam and his team resolved an issue with my elderly parents’ irrigation system after other companies indicated they would probably just need to install a new system. Colby did a fantastic job and I appreciate the communication throughout the project. I’ve been so impressed that I’m going to change my home to Cary Sprinklers going forward! Highly recommend!

Why homeowners choose us

01

Volume over force

We size the air to the system instead of hitting every yard with the same setting. That is the difference between a blow-out that protects your components and one that quietly damages them.

02

Owner-involved, accountable

Adam runs this crew and stands behind every blow-out. The same local team works your yard each autumn, so they already know where your low spots are.

03

Honest about what we find

If a zone will not clear, we say so and explain why rather than packing up and hoping. Upfront pricing, a 100% satisfaction guarantee and a 12-month workmanship warranty on anything we repair.

Sprinkler blow-out FAQ

When should I get a sprinkler blow-out in the Triangle?

Book it for late October into November, before the first hard freeze. You do not need to wait for cold weather to schedule — the calendar fills quickly once the first freeze warning goes out, and a system blown out early loses nothing.

Can I do a sprinkler blow-out myself with my compressor?

Most home compressors deliver good pressure and nowhere near enough volume, so they leave water behind while still being capable of blowing seals out of heads and valves. If you do try it, cap the pressure well below what the tank can produce and expect to need several passes.

What happens if I skip the blow-out entirely?

Sometimes nothing, for a mild winter. The common outcomes are a cracked backflow assembly, split laterals in the shallow runs, and heads that weep all spring. Any one of them runs to several multiples of what the blow-out costs.

How long does a blow-out take?

A typical residential system with six to ten zones takes around thirty to forty-five minutes. Larger properties and systems with drip zones take longer because those zones get cleared separately at lower pressure.
