Trusted sprinkler winterization in Cary, NC

Sprinkler winterization means shutting off the supply, blowing out every zone with compressed air, and protecting the backflow before the Triangle’s first hard freeze — then reversing it all with a careful spring startup. Cary Sprinklers has handled both seasonal visits for Cary homeowners for over a decade. Same accountable local team each time, with Adam staying close to every job.

Cary sits on tight Wake County clay, which holds water against shallow pipe long after you shut the system down — wet lines left through a hard freeze are how backflows and fittings crack. Timing matters here, since the first real freeze usually lands in November, so we schedule sprinkler winterization ahead of it. Cary’s water setup adds a wrinkle no other Triangle town has: neighborhoods near the North and South Cary Water Reclamation Facilities run reclaimed purple-pipe water, which carries extra grit and minerals into nozzles and filters over the season. At spring startup we flush that grit, run every zone, and reset potable-system controllers to the Town’s year-round alternate-day schedule. Reclaimed users are exempt from that schedule, and we program their controllers accordingly.

We serve homeowners throughout Cary — including Preston, Amberly, MacGregor Downs, Lochmere, Cary Park, and Regency — and the surrounding Wake County area, and we’ve handled sprinkler winterization across the town for over a decade.

The pattern we see most: a Lochmere or MacGregor Downs homeowner skips one fall sprinkler blowout, and in March the backflow is split down the body. Freeze-cracked RPZs are our single most common spring repair in Cary, and nearly every one traces back to water left sitting in the assembly.

Common sprinkler winterization problems we fix in Cary

Big or small, we fix it right the first time with genuine Hunter, Rain Bird & Toro parts.

Freeze-cracked backflows

A cracked RPZ is the most common spring repair we see in Cary — water left in the assembly expands in a hard freeze and splits the body. A thorough blowout and drain-down prevents it.

Wet lines in shallow clay

Tight Wake County clay holds moisture around pipe that was never buried deep. Any water left in the laterals freezes, and you find the splits as soggy spots in April.

Water hammer at startup

Opening the main valve fast slams pressurized water into empty pipe and blows fittings apart. Our spring startup pressurizes the mainline slowly, on purpose.

Grit-clogged nozzles on reclaimed systems

Reclaimed water near the two reclamation facilities leaves mineral grit sitting in nozzles and filters all winter. We flush and clean them at startup so every zone sprays evenly.

Stuck valves and seized heads

Zones that sat through winter sometimes come back with valves that stick open or refuse to fire. We run every zone at startup and catch these before your lawn does.

Wrong controller schedule

Controllers that lost power over winter come back on default programs that ignore Cary’s odd/even rules. We reset yours to the correct alternate-day schedule, or confirm your reclaimed exemption.

Who needs sprinkler winterization in Cary?

From established MacGregor Downs systems to newer Amberly installs, most Cary irrigation owners need the same two seasonal visits — here’s who calls us.

Owners of established systems

MacGregor Downs, Lochmere, and Regency have mature landscapes with irrigation that’s been in the clay for decades. Older fittings and backflows are the least forgiving of a skipped blowout.

Reclaimed-water households

Homes near the North and South Cary Water Reclamation Facilities run purple-pipe water that loads nozzles with grit over the season. Their startups need a real flush-and-clean, not just pressure.

First-time irrigation owners

Buyers new to Cary Park or Amberly often inherit a system with no service history. One fall visit protects it, and one spring startup shows them how it should actually run.

Annual-plan customers

Busy households that want both seasonal visits handled automatically roll winterization and startup into our maintenance plan. Same team, same system knowledge, every year.

Signs you need sprinkler winterization in Cary

If you notice any of these, it’s time for a look:

  • You skipped last fall’s sprinkler blowout
  • The first November hard freeze is in the forecast
  • Your backflow assembly is still full of water
  • Zones sputter or spray unevenly after winter
  • Soggy spots show up on the first spring run
  • Your controller reset itself to a default schedule

Why sprinkler winterization in Cary isn’t like the rest of the Triangle

Cary isn’t like the rest of the Triangle, and we work to what makes it different.

What Cary homeowners should know

  • Backflow required: Cary requires a backflow preventer on every system, on a three-year residential test cycle under NC Senate Bill 166 (annual with a booster pump or chemical feed). A proper fall blowout drains and protects that assembly so it passes come spring.
  • Potable & reclaimed water: Most Cary homes are on potable water, but some run on the Town’s reclaimed system. We winterize and start up both, and we keep the lines properly separated.
  • Alternate-day watering: Potable systems follow Cary’s year-round odd/even schedule; reclaimed users are exempt. Every spring startup ends with your controller reset to match.
  • Permitted to Town spec: In-ground systems in Cary are permitted to the Town’s design standards. Our seasonal service keeps your system compliant instead of letting it quietly drift out of spec.

I’m so glad I found Cary Sprinklers! Adam, the owner, is incredibly friendly, honest, and straightforward. He found several problems with our sprinkler system and was able to fix them for a very reasonable price. We had other companies come out who tried to upsell us on repairs costing thousands of dollars, so the difference was unbelievable. I have some experience in this field myself, so I know how to evaluate vendors and recognize when someone is being honest and when they’re simply trying to sell you more work. Adam was clearly focused on actually solving the problems rather than taking advantage of us. He saved us a tremendous amount of money, and we really appreciate it. Thank you so much, Adam, for your honesty, professionalism, and excellent work. Highly recommended!

This is the second time we have used Cary Sprinklers, and both times involved dirty digging and repairing complex leaks. The first was an underground valve leak and they put the dirt and our sod back as if it was their own home. The site around our second job by our backflow was also filled in nicely. Adam the owner, Matt the estimator, and Colby the irrigation magician were all great to work with. We think our irrigation in our box came apart when TOC main busted and the extreme pressure of 200+ psi was too much. Matt did a thorough job looking at our issue, answering all my questions about the possible TOC main break playing a part, and giving quote for the time he felt it would take. Keep in mind, this is the type of small business where you need to be flexible on the time of arrival since prior jobs may put them behind. With this said, the crew will spend all the time needed to repair the issue you have at your home and not rush to make things just good enough. They want to make sure the repair is done to your satisfaction. I texted Adam several times and he had a prompt response time. He was also prompt via email with a post work invoice question. We recommend supporting Cary Sprinklers for the reasons above and because this is a small business growing roots in our community.

Adam and Gerald showed up right on time and kept me updated with texts the night before and the day of with their ETA. I needed a new zone added for part of the yard that wasn’t getting enough water anymore, and they did a great job. Fair pricing, excellent communication, and very professional — I’m really happy with the result.

5 stars — Highly recommend Cary Sprinklers! We hired Cary Sprinklers to expand our existing irrigation system by extending one zone and adding a completely new zone. From the beginning, they were professional, knowledgeable, and very easy to work with. What really impressed us was the equipment and efficiency. They used a Toro Dingo to trench the new lines, which allowed them to get the work done quickly and professionally while keeping the disruption to our yard to a minimum. The crew clearly knew what they were doing, and the installation was done right. Adam took the time to explain what we needed and why, and the communication throughout the project was excellent. The new zones give us much better coverage of the property, and everything is working exactly as it should. We couldn’t be happier with the finished system. The whole process was smooth, and the work exceeded our expectations. We would definitely use Cary Sprinklers again.

Cary Sprinklers is amazing. Adam is professional, capable, and wonderful to do business with. We called him because we had trouble with our timer app and controller. It wasn’t a brand that he usually works with, but he figured it out and fixed it anyway. Additionally, his team did an amazing job removing this massive root to get a broken sprinkler out of the ground and replace it and even under budget! I’ve done business with a few sprinkler companies in my lifetime, and these guys are the best!! They are honest, reliable, and very detail oriented. You will not be sorry if you call Cary Sprinklers.

How our sprinkler winterization works

No mystery, no runaround — here’s the order we work in.

Shut down and drain

We shut off the irrigation supply, open the drains, and relieve pressure through the whole system before any air goes in.

Zone-by-zone blowout

Compressed air pushes the water out of every zone at safe pressure — a full sprinkler blowout, not a quick pass over the front yard.

Protect the backflow

We drain the backflow assembly and leave it set to survive a hard freeze, since a cracked RPZ is the repair that ruins the most Cary springs.

Spring startup

Come spring we pressurize the mainline slowly, run and inspect every zone, check heads, valves, and the backflow, and reset your controller to Cary’s watering schedule.

What sets a professional sprinkler winterization team apart in Cary

A professional sprinkler winterization team shows up with a compressor sized to clear long zone runs, not a shop unit that leaves water in the far laterals. They know Cary specifically: which neighborhoods run reclaimed water, what Senate Bill 166 requires of your backflow, and how long clay-country pipe holds water compared to sandy soil. They treat spring startup as half the job — slow pressurization, a zone-by-zone inspection, and a controller reset, not just flipping a valve. And they stand behind the visit; ours carries a 12-month workmanship warranty and a 100% satisfaction guarantee. The same local team returns in spring, so nothing gets lost between visits.

How long does sprinkler winterization take in Cary?

Book sprinkler winterization for late October through November in Cary — ahead of the first hard freeze, which typically arrives here in November. The blowout itself usually takes well under an hour on a typical residential system; larger properties with more zones take longer. Spring startup runs a bit longer because we pressurize slowly and inspect every zone, head, and valve. Most Cary customers book both visits at once, or roll them into our annual maintenance plan so the timing is never on their calendar. If a surprise early freeze is coming, call — we prioritize systems that are still wet.

How much does sprinkler winterization cost in Cary?

Sprinkler winterization pricing in Cary is upfront and depends on scope: zone count, whether the backflow needs extra attention, and whether we’re bundling the fall blowout with spring startup. Bundling both seasonal visits, or folding them into an annual maintenance plan, is the best value for most homes. You get the price before we start, so there are no surprises on the invoice. Estimates are free — call or text 919-341-9644 and we’ll quote your system.

How to choose a sprinkler winterization company in Cary

Plenty of outfits advertise sprinkler winterization near me every fall, so ask a few pointed questions before anyone hooks a compressor to your system. What air pressure do they run per zone, and is the compressor sized for long laterals? Do they drain and protect the backflow assembly, or just blow out the zones? Does spring startup include slow pressurization and a full inspection, or a quick valve turn? We answer all of those in plain terms, and back the work with 12 months on workmanship.

Serving Cary neighborhoods

Our seasonal routes run through every corner of Cary. Preston and MacGregor Downs mean mature systems with long zone runs and older backflows that demand a thorough blowout; Lochmere and Regency are similar, with established plantings that punish a missed startup inspection. Amberly and Cary Park skew newer, with smart controllers that need a proper reprogram after a winter offline. Wherever you are, it’s the same local team on both visits. For the full picture of what we offer around town, see our Cary, NC services page.

What makes Cary different is the reclaimed water. Systems near the North and South Cary Water Reclamation Facilities collect grit and mineral scale that potable systems don’t, so a Cary spring startup includes nozzle and filter flushing we rarely need in other Triangle towns.

Cary sprinkler winterization FAQ

When should I schedule sprinkler winterization in Cary?

Before the first hard freeze, which usually arrives in November here. Late October through mid-November is the sweet spot; if you wait for the frost warning, you’re racing everyone else’s phone call.

What does winterization cost in Cary?

It depends on zone count and whether you bundle the fall blowout with spring startup or an annual plan. Pricing is upfront and estimates are free — call or text 919-341-9644 for a quote on your system.

Can’t I just wrap the backflow in insulation?

Insulation buys a few degrees, but a Triangle hard freeze will still crack a backflow that’s full of water — a split RPZ is the most common spring repair we see. Draining it properly is the only reliable protection.

Do reclaimed-water systems in Cary need winterizing too?

Yes — reclaimed lines freeze exactly like potable ones. The difference shows at spring startup, where the extra grit and minerals in reclaimed water mean we spend more time flushing nozzles and filters.

What happens at spring startup?

We pressurize the mainline slowly to avoid water hammer, run every zone, and inspect heads, valves, and the backflow assembly. Then we reset your controller to Cary’s alternate-day schedule, or confirm your exemption if you’re on reclaimed water.

Will you reset my controller for Cary’s watering schedule at startup?

Yes. Potable systems get programmed to the Town’s year-round odd/even alternate-day schedule as part of every spring startup. If you’re on reclaimed water you’re exempt, and we set your controller for what your landscape actually needs instead.
