How a dry patch actually gets diagnosed
A brown crescent is a symptom, not a diagnosis, and the quickest way to waste money on one is to swap the nearest head and hope. We run the zone with catch cups set out across it — straight-sided containers on a grid through the dry area and out into the green grass around it. Run it a fixed time, then compare what collected. When the cups in the thin spot hold a swallow and the cups twenty feet away are half full, coverage is the problem and you can see precisely where it drops off.
Then it’s a question of which failure did it. Every head in the zone gets checked against what it was meant to do: arc set where it belongs, radius actually reaching its neighbors, rotation completing in both directions, nothing throwing at a fence or a downspout.
Pressure gets ruled out before any head takes the blame. Misting at the top of the pattern means too much of it. Rotors closing into donuts with a dry center means too little. The last head on a run barely lifting while the first one hammers means the zone is starving upstream. From the driveway all three look like a bad head, and none of them are.
What reclaimed water does to nozzles over time
Purple pipe changes the wear pattern. Reclaimed service runs through the neighborhoods near the North and South Cary Water Reclamation Facilities, with stretches of Morrisville and Holly Springs on it as well, and it’s exempt from the alternate-day odd/even rule — so those systems are allowed to run more nights a week than a potable system next door. More available nights means more hours on the same nozzles every season.
Reclaimed water also carries more fine suspended material than potable does, and it ends up exactly where you’d expect: in the filter basket under the head and in the nozzle screen. The failures come on gradually rather than all at once. A rotor stream starts fanning instead of holding together. A sweep slows, then stalls partway across. A spray pattern goes lopsided on one side only.
So the repair looks different too. Half of it is cleaning rather than replacing — pulling baskets and screens, rinsing them, reseating them — and the honest answer is that it wants doing on a schedule, not once. When the same head breaks every year, move it
Some heads are unlucky once. Others are telling you something about where they sit. A head clipped every single season is almost always in a spot that guarantees it: proud at the lip of a driveway where a tire tracks over the edge, at the apex of a mower’s turn, at the mouth of a bed where a trailer backs in, inside the swing of a gate, or in the strip along the curb where car doors and delivery carts land. Dropping a new part into that same spot just buys the same failure again next year.
The fix is position. We move it back into turf and change the nozzle so the coverage stays the same from a safer place, put it on a swing joint so a hit flexes instead of snapping the riser, and set it dead flush — a head standing an eighth of an inch proud is a target, one at grade gets rolled over.
