Spring sprinkler startup, brought up slowly on purpose

Spring sprinkler startup is the visit that turns a winterized system back on without breaking it, and it is far more than opening a valve. Cary Sprinklers charges the mainline gradually, walks every zone while it runs, and hands the season back to you with a controller that knows what month it is.

Rushing the charge is the single most expensive mistake of the spring. An empty mainline refilled at full speed sends a column of water down dry pipe with nothing to cushion it, and that surge finds the weakest fitting in the system — often one that survived the winter perfectly well. We open the supply a fraction of a turn and let the line fill over several minutes instead. The other half of the visit is the walk-around: winter shifts heads in our clay as the ground heaves and settles, mower wheels tilt them through the season, and a nozzle that spent five months full of grit rarely comes back with its pattern intact. Around the Triangle the last frost usually falls in the first ten days of April, which is the sensible earliest date to leave a system charged overnight.

We handle spring sprinkler startup for homeowners in Cary, Raleigh, Apex, Morrisville, Holly Springs, Fuquay-Varina and throughout Wake County — part of our winterization and spring startup service.

What we check on a spring startup

Diagnosed right and fixed with genuine Hunter, Rain Bird & Toro parts.

A slow, controlled charge

The main comes up over minutes, not seconds, with the last zone left open so air has somewhere to go. This one step prevents most of the burst fittings we get called out for in April.

Every zone run and watched

We stand in the yard while each zone runs. A dry patch, a head throwing sideways or a zone that comes up weak tells us more in thirty seconds than any diagnostic from the controller.

Heads levelled and aimed

Winter heave, mower damage and settling all move heads. We straighten what is leaning, raise what has sunk into the turf, and turn arcs back off the driveway and the street.

Nozzles and filters cleared

Grit that settled over the winter clogs nozzle slots and screens, which shows up as short throw and misting. We pull, flush and reseat rather than leaving you with weak coverage all season.

The backflow checked and, if due, tested

We confirm the assembly held through the winter and look for the hairline weep that means it did not. If your annual certified test is due, we can handle that at the same visit.

The controller reset for spring

Programs get rebuilt for April rather than left on whatever was running last September, with realistic run times for cool soil and a seasonal adjustment you will actually want in June.

Signs it is time for your spring startup

  • The last frost date has passed and the lawn is greening up
  • The controller is still sitting on off or rain mode
  • You had the system blown out last autumn and have not touched it since
  • A zone came up weak or patchy the last time you ran it
  • Your backflow test notice has arrived for the year

How the work happens, step by step

No mystery, no runaround — here’s the order we work in.

Inspect before any water moves

We look over the backflow, the valve boxes and the visible heads first. Finding a cracked assembly while the system is still empty is a much smaller problem than finding it under pressure.

Charge the line gradually

The supply opens slowly with a zone left open to vent, so the mainline fills without a surge. We listen and watch the assembly the whole time it comes up.

Run and walk every zone

Each zone runs while we walk it, checking coverage, pressure, arcs and any sign of a leak surfacing. Anything adjustable gets adjusted right then.

Program and hand it back

We set a schedule that suits cool spring soil and your town’s watering rules, show you what changed, and flag anything that needs a separate repair visit.

I’m so glad I found Cary Sprinklers! Adam, the owner, is incredibly friendly, honest, and straightforward. He found several problems with our sprinkler system and was able to fix them for a very reasonable price. We had other companies come out who tried to upsell us on repairs costing thousands of dollars, so the difference was unbelievable. I have some experience in this field myself, so I know how to evaluate vendors and recognize when someone is being honest and when they’re simply trying to sell you more work. Adam was clearly focused on actually solving the problems rather than taking advantage of us. He saved us a tremendous amount of money, and we really appreciate it. Thank you so much, Adam, for your honesty, professionalism, and excellent work. Highly recommended!

This is the second time we have used Cary Sprinklers, and both times involved dirty digging and repairing complex leaks. The first was an underground valve leak and they put the dirt and our sod back as if it was their own home. The site around our second job by our backflow was also filled in nicely. Adam the owner, Matt the estimator, and Colby the irrigation magician were all great to work with. We think our irrigation in our box came apart when TOC main busted and the extreme pressure of 200+ psi was too much. Matt did a thorough job looking at our issue, answering all my questions about the possible TOC main break playing a part, and giving quote for the time he felt it would take. Keep in mind, this is the type of small business where you need to be flexible on the time of arrival since prior jobs may put them behind. With this said, the crew will spend all the time needed to repair the issue you have at your home and not rush to make things just good enough. They want to make sure the repair is done to your satisfaction. I texted Adam several times and he had a prompt response time. He was also prompt via email with a post work invoice question. We recommend supporting Cary Sprinklers for the reasons above and because this is a small business growing roots in our community.

Adam and Gerald showed up right on time and kept me updated with texts the night before and the day of with their ETA. I needed a new zone added for part of the yard that wasn’t getting enough water anymore, and they did a great job. Fair pricing, excellent communication, and very professional — I’m really happy with the result.

5 stars — Highly recommend Cary Sprinklers! We hired Cary Sprinklers to expand our existing irrigation system by extending one zone and adding a completely new zone. From the beginning, they were professional, knowledgeable, and very easy to work with. What really impressed us was the equipment and efficiency. They used a Toro Dingo to trench the new lines, which allowed them to get the work done quickly and professionally while keeping the disruption to our yard to a minimum. The crew clearly knew what they were doing, and the installation was done right. Adam took the time to explain what we needed and why, and the communication throughout the project was excellent. The new zones give us much better coverage of the property, and everything is working exactly as it should. We couldn’t be happier with the finished system. The whole process was smooth, and the work exceeded our expectations. We would definitely use Cary Sprinklers again.

Cary Sprinklers is amazing. Adam is professional, capable, and wonderful to do business with. We called him because we had trouble with our timer app and controller. It wasn’t a brand that he usually works with, but he figured it out and fixed it anyway. Additionally, his team did an amazing job removing this massive root to get a broken sprinkler out of the ground and replace it and even under budget! I’ve done business with a few sprinkler companies in my lifetime, and these guys are the best!! They are honest, reliable, and very detail oriented. You will not be sorry if you call Cary Sprinklers.

Adam came out and made adjustments to several unfamiliar sprinkler heads that had been causing some lawn coverage issues. He worked quickly & efficiently to correct the issues to my satisfaction. A very good experience!

Why homeowners choose us

01

We charge it slowly, always

Every startup gets the gradual fill, even on a system we winterized ourselves. It costs a few extra minutes and saves the burst-fitting call that follows a fast one.

02

The same crew that shut it down

Adam’s local team works the same properties season after season, so the person opening your system in April usually knows exactly where the awkward zone is.

03

Adjustments included, not upsold

Levelling heads, clearing nozzles and setting arcs are part of the startup, not extras. Upfront pricing, a 100% satisfaction guarantee and a 12-month workmanship warranty on any repair.

Spring sprinkler startup FAQ

When should I start my sprinkler system in the Triangle?

Wait until the last frost has passed, which is usually the first week or two of April here. Turning a system on during a warm March spell and leaving it charged through a late freeze is a common way to lose a backflow assembly.

Can I just turn the water back on myself?

You can, and the risk is entirely in how fast you open it. Opening the supply a fraction of a turn and letting the mainline fill over several minutes with one zone open avoids the surge that splits fittings. Most spring damage we repair comes from a valve opened quickly.

What if a zone does not come on at startup?

Usually it is a valve that stuck over the winter, a solenoid that failed, or wiring damaged by rodents in the off season. We diagnose it during the visit and quote the repair before doing any of it.

Do I need my backflow tested at the same time?

Many Triangle water utilities require an annual certified test on an irrigation backflow, and requirements vary by town. Pairing the test with the startup means one appointment instead of two, and we will tell you if yours is due.
