Sprinkler controller programming for clay, not for a manual

Sprinkler controller programming is the difference between a system that waters your lawn and one that waters your street. The hardware can be perfect and the schedule still wrong, and a bad schedule wastes more water in a Triangle summer than any leak most properties will ever have.

Clay is the reason the default settings do not work here. Piedmont clay absorbs water slowly, so a zone that runs for twenty minutes straight puts down more than the ground can take in that time and the surplus runs off — you pay for it, the lawn never sees it, and the neighbours watch it go down the kerb. The fix is cycle-and-soak: split the run into two or three shorter cycles with a gap between them so each one has time to absorb. Run times also depend on what is in the ground, because rotors deliver far less water per minute than fixed spray heads and need proportionally longer. On top of that sit the local rules — several Triangle towns operate odd-even or day-restricted watering, and Cary runs a reclaimed water programme with its own conditions — so a schedule has to be legal as well as effective. Then there is the part everyone forgets: an April schedule left running in July underwaters, and a July schedule left running in October drowns everything.

We program irrigation controllers for homeowners in Cary, Raleigh, Apex, Morrisville, Holly Springs, Fuquay-Varina and throughout Wake County — part of our smart controller installation service.

What we set up when we program a controller

Diagnosed right and fixed with genuine Hunter, Rain Bird & Toro parts.

Cycle-and-soak for clay

Long single run times run off in Piedmont clay. We split each zone into shorter cycles with a soak between them, which is the single biggest improvement available on most Triangle schedules.

Run times matched to head type

Rotors put down far less water per minute than fixed sprays, so identical run times across mixed zones always leave someone dry. We set each zone to what its heads actually deliver.

Watering windows that comply

Odd-even and day-restricted rules differ by town, and reclaimed water carries its own conditions. We build a schedule that fits your address, not a generic one.

Early morning start times

Watering finishes before the heat, which cuts evaporation, and before the day begins, which keeps wet grass off the path. Evening watering leaves foliage damp overnight and invites disease.

Seasonal adjustment set properly

One percentage figure scales every run time as the year turns. Set correctly it means you change one number twice a year rather than reprogramming the whole controller.

The app configured and explained

On a smart controller we set up the app, connect it to your network, check the weather feed is pulling for your location, and make sure you can actually work it.

Signs your schedule needs attention

  • Water running off into the street or down the driveway
  • Dry patches in one zone while another stays soggy
  • The same programme has been running since it was installed
  • You are not sure which days your town allows watering
  • The smart controller is installed but nobody has opened the app

How the work happens, step by step

No mystery, no runaround — here’s the order we work in.

Inventory the zones

We walk the system and note what each zone actually contains — rotors, sprays, drip, sun or shade, slope or flat. None of that is on the controller and all of it changes the schedule.

Check the rules for your address

Watering restrictions, day rules and any reclaimed water conditions get confirmed for your town before the schedule is built.

Build and load the programme

Cycle-and-soak run times, sensible start times, correct days and a seasonal adjustment go in, and the whole thing gets saved and backed up where the controller supports it.

Run it and hand it over

We run the programme, watch for runoff, adjust anything that needs it, and show you the two or three settings you will actually want to change yourself.

Adam and his team resolved an issue with my elderly parents’ irrigation system after other companies indicated they would probably just need to install a new system. Colby did a fantastic job and I appreciate the communication throughout the project. I’ve been so impressed that I’m going to change my home to Cary Sprinklers going forward! Highly recommend!

Why homeowners choose us

01

We program for the soil you have

Cycle-and-soak is standard on every schedule we build here, because Piedmont clay does not behave like the sandy soil the defaults assume.

02

We leave you able to change it

A schedule you cannot adjust is a schedule you will resent. We show you seasonal adjust and rain delay, and leave the rest set correctly.

03

Included with maintenance visits

Seasonal reprogramming is part of what a tune-up should cover, so it is not a separate call. Upfront pricing, guaranteed work, 12-month workmanship warranty.

Sprinkler controller programming FAQ

How long should each zone run?

There is no single answer, because it depends on head type, soil, sun and slope. Rotors typically need considerably longer than fixed spray heads for the same amount of water. What matters more is splitting the total into cycles so clay has time to absorb it.

What is cycle-and-soak and do I need it?

It means running a zone in two or three short bursts with a soak period between, instead of one long run. In Piedmont clay you almost certainly need it — it is the difference between water going into the ground and water going into the street.

When should my system run?

Early morning, finishing before the day heats up. That minimises evaporation and lets foliage dry. Evening watering leaves grass wet overnight, which encourages fungal disease in our humidity.

Do I have to follow my town’s watering rules?

Several Triangle towns operate day restrictions or odd-even schedules, and reclaimed water programmes carry their own conditions. The rules vary by address, so we confirm what applies to you and build the schedule around it.

Can you set up my smart controller app?

Yes. We connect the controller to your network, confirm the weather feed is pulling for your location, set the zone details it needs to work properly, and show you how to use it. An unconfigured smart controller is just an expensive timer.
