Backflow winterization protects the one part with nowhere to hide
Backflow winterization drains, relieves and shields the assembly that stands above ground between your water supply and your irrigation system. Everything else in a sprinkler system has soil around it. The backflow has air on all sides, which is why it is almost always the first thing a Triangle winter breaks.
The failure is mechanical and completely predictable. A small amount of water sits trapped in the body and between the check valves after the system shuts down; it freezes, expands by roughly a tenth of its volume, and the brass has nowhere to give. Sometimes the result is an obvious split you can see. More often it is a hairline crack or a distorted internal seat that shows nothing at all until spring, when the assembly weeps under pressure or fails its certified test. Replacing a residential assembly is one of the more expensive single repairs on an irrigation system, and unlike a cracked lateral you cannot leave it and water around the problem — a failed backflow means the system stays off. An insulated cover on its own does not solve this: a bag over a full assembly slows the freeze down, it does not stop it. Draining first is what matters.

Isolating at the supply
The irrigation shut-off is closed and the system depressurised before anything else happens, so no new water can work its way back into the assembly over the winter.
Draining the body properly
We open the test cocks and drain the assembly through them rather than trusting it to empty itself. Water trapped between the checks is exactly what does the damage.
Test cocks left correctly positioned
Cocks are left partly open so any water that does collect has somewhere to go instead of somewhere to freeze. Closed tight is how assemblies crack over a mild winter.
Insulation that actually helps
An insulated cover goes on a drained assembly, not a full one. Done in that order it is genuinely useful; done in the wrong order it just delays the crack.
Checking what winter will find
We look over the unions, the shut-offs and the relief port while it is drained. A seep that is minor in November tends to be a replacement by April.

How the work happens, step by step
No mystery, no runaround — here’s the order we work in.
Close and depressurise
We shut the irrigation supply and relieve pressure through a zone, so the assembly is not holding water under load while we work on it.
Drain through the test cocks
Each cock is opened in turn to clear the body and the space between the check valves, then left in the position that lets it keep draining through the winter.
Inspect while it is empty
With the assembly drained we can see the condition of the seats, unions and relief port properly — the one time of year that inspection is easy.
Cover and record
An insulated cover goes over the drained assembly, and we note the make, size and condition so the spring test and any warranty question is straightforward.

Backflow winterization FAQ
Is an insulated cover enough on its own?
No. A cover slows heat loss but a full assembly still freezes in a sustained cold snap, and it will hold moisture against the brass in the meantime. Drain the assembly first, then cover it — in that order it genuinely helps.
Does winterizing affect my annual backflow test?
Not at all. The certified test happens in the season when the system is charged, and a properly drained assembly is more likely to pass it because it has not spent the winter with water sitting in the checks.
What does a replacement cost if it does crack?
Considerably more than the winterization, and it varies by device type and size. The frustrating part is that a failed assembly takes the whole irrigation system out of service until it is replaced, so it is rarely a repair you can defer.
Can I drain the backflow myself?
You can, if you know which test cocks to open and in what order, and you are comfortable leaving them correctly positioned. The mistakes we see are closing everything tight afterwards and leaving water between the check valves.
