Trusted downspout drainage across the Triangle

Downspout drainage is the buried piping that carries roof water away from your house so it discharges out in the yard instead of pooling beside the foundation. Cary Sprinklers installs it across Cary, Raleigh, and the rest of Wake County, and most jobs are dug, piped, and invisible again in a single day. Owner Adam K has spent more than a decade watching what short downspouts do to homes on Triangle clay, and the fix is simpler than most people expect.

Our clay soil sheds water fast rather than absorbing it, so everything your roof collects lands at one corner and sits there against the footing. A modest roof can concentrate hundreds of gallons at a single downspout during one Triangle thunderstorm. That is why we run solid pipe on a consistent downhill slope and release the water at least 6 to 10 feet from the foundation, farther whenever the lot allows. Perforated pipe has its place where you actually want absorption, but for transporting roof water, solid pipe moves the most volume with zero loss along the way.

We handle downspout drainage for homeowners in Cary, Raleigh, Apex, Morrisville, Holly Springs, Fuquay-Varina and throughout Wake County — part of our drainage & french drains service.

Downspout drainage problems we solve

Diagnosed right and fixed with genuine Hunter, Rain Bird & Toro parts.

Foundation settling & cracking

Roof water dumped beside the house soaks the soil under the footing, and clay that swells and shrinks with every storm slowly moves your foundation. A buried downspout drainage line breaks that cycle by getting the water gone before it can saturate anything.

Crawlspace moisture & mold

Water pooling at the exterior wall finds its way under the house, driving up humidity and feeding mold on joists and insulation. Redirecting the downspouts is usually the cheapest step toward a dry crawlspace.

Landscape erosion

A concentrated stream off a short extension carves channels through beds and strips soil from slopes. Piping the flow underground to a controlled outlet stops the gouging for good.

Mulch washout

Every heavy rain floats your mulch into the lawn and leaves bare patches at the drip line corners. Once the roof water travels in pipe below the beds, the mulch stays where you put it.

Standing water in the turf

Runoff that sheets off the roof and stalls in low spots leaves soggy grass, mosquito puddles, and ruts from the mower. We move that discharge point past the problem area so the lawn can actually drain.

Failed or shallow extensions

Above-ground plastic extensions crack, detach, block the mower, and trip guests, and corrugated pipe buried an inch deep crushes and clogs. We replace them with properly sloped solid pipe that you never see or think about again.

Signs you need downspout drainage

  • Water pooling at the foundation after rain
  • Musty smell or damp air in the crawlspace
  • Mulch or soil washing out below downspouts
  • Hairline cracks appearing in brick or slab
  • Soggy turf that never firms up between storms

How the work happens, step by step

No mystery, no runaround — here’s the order we work in.

Walk the roof lines

We trace where every downspout discharges, check grade with a level, and find the natural low route for each run. No guesswork, just an honest read of how your lot actually sheds water.

Plan the route & outlets

Each downspout drainage run gets a mapped path, a target discharge point at least 6 to 10 feet out, and the right outlet, whether that is a pop-up emitter, a catch basin connection, or a tie-in to an existing French drain network. You approve the plan and the upfront price before a shovel touches dirt.

Trench, pipe & connect

We cut narrow trenches with minimal, controlled excavation to protect your landscaping, then set solid pipe on a continuous slope so gravity does all the work. Adapters seal each downspout directly into the line so nothing leaks back out at the house.

Backfill & restore

Soil and sod go back in place, we test the run with a hose, and we walk you through where the water now exits. Most systems are finished and invisible the same day, backed by our 12-month workmanship warranty.

I’m so glad I found Cary Sprinklers! Adam, the owner, is incredibly friendly, honest, and straightforward. He found several problems with our sprinkler system and was able to fix them for a very reasonable price. We had other companies come out who tried to upsell us on repairs costing thousands of dollars, so the difference was unbelievable. I have some experience in this field myself, so I know how to evaluate vendors and recognize when someone is being honest and when they’re simply trying to sell you more work. Adam was clearly focused on actually solving the problems rather than taking advantage of us. He saved us a tremendous amount of money, and we really appreciate it. Thank you so much, Adam, for your honesty, professionalism, and excellent work. Highly recommended!

This is the second time we have used Cary Sprinklers, and both times involved dirty digging and repairing complex leaks. The first was an underground valve leak and they put the dirt and our sod back as if it was their own home. The site around our second job by our backflow was also filled in nicely. Adam the owner, Matt the estimator, and Colby the irrigation magician were all great to work with. We think our irrigation in our box came apart when TOC main busted and the extreme pressure of 200+ psi was too much. Matt did a thorough job looking at our issue, answering all my questions about the possible TOC main break playing a part, and giving quote for the time he felt it would take. Keep in mind, this is the type of small business where you need to be flexible on the time of arrival since prior jobs may put them behind. With this said, the crew will spend all the time needed to repair the issue you have at your home and not rush to make things just good enough. They want to make sure the repair is done to your satisfaction. I texted Adam several times and he had a prompt response time. He was also prompt via email with a post work invoice question. We recommend supporting Cary Sprinklers for the reasons above and because this is a small business growing roots in our community.

Adam and Gerald showed up right on time and kept me updated with texts the night before and the day of with their ETA. I needed a new zone added for part of the yard that wasn’t getting enough water anymore, and they did a great job. Fair pricing, excellent communication, and very professional — I’m really happy with the result.

5 stars — Highly recommend Cary Sprinklers! We hired Cary Sprinklers to expand our existing irrigation system by extending one zone and adding a completely new zone. From the beginning, they were professional, knowledgeable, and very easy to work with. What really impressed us was the equipment and efficiency. They used a Toro Dingo to trench the new lines, which allowed them to get the work done quickly and professionally while keeping the disruption to our yard to a minimum. The crew clearly knew what they were doing, and the installation was done right. Adam took the time to explain what we needed and why, and the communication throughout the project was excellent. The new zones give us much better coverage of the property, and everything is working exactly as it should. We couldn’t be happier with the finished system. The whole process was smooth, and the work exceeded our expectations. We would definitely use Cary Sprinklers again.

Cary Sprinklers is amazing. Adam is professional, capable, and wonderful to do business with. We called him because we had trouble with our timer app and controller. It wasn’t a brand that he usually works with, but he figured it out and fixed it anyway. Additionally, his team did an amazing job removing this massive root to get a broken sprinkler out of the ground and replace it and even under budget! I’ve done business with a few sprinkler companies in my lifetime, and these guys are the best!! They are honest, reliable, and very detail oriented. You will not be sorry if you call Cary Sprinklers.

Why homeowners choose us

01

The owner stands behind it

Adam K stands behind every job — no rotating crew that has never seen Triangle clay behave in a downpour. Ten-plus years of local drainage work goes into every routing decision.

02

Minimal, tidy excavation

We hand-cut and machine-trench only where the pipe goes, lifting sod carefully and putting beds back the way we found them. A finished downspout drainage job should be judged by how little evidence it leaves behind.

03

Diagnosis before digging

Some wet spots come from grading, some from a leaking irrigation mainline or lateral, and some from the roof. We figure out which one you actually have first, so you pay for the fix that works, guaranteed by our 100% satisfaction promise.

Downspout drainage FAQ

How much does downspout drainage cost?

It depends on the number of downspouts, the length of each run, and what we tie into, so we quote every job upfront after a free on-site estimate. You get one clear price before any digging starts, and the number does not move once we begin. No surprise line items, ever.

How far should downspouts discharge from the house?

At least 6 to 10 feet from the foundation is the working minimum, and on clay we like more distance when the grade cooperates. Closer than that, the water just circles back through the soil to the footing. We pick the exact outlet spot based on your slope and where the yard can safely accept the flow.

What is a pop-up emitter and will I mow over it?

It is a small spring-loaded lid at the end of the buried line that opens under water pressure during rain and sits flush the rest of the time. You mow right over it and never notice it. It is the cleanest way to release roof water into a lawn without an open pipe end collecting leaves and critters.

Can you connect downspouts to my French drain?

Often, yes, but the roof water should travel in its own solid pipe rather than dumping into perforated French drain pipe near the house, which just injects water into the soil you are trying to dry out. We keep transport lines and absorption lines separate and merge them where it makes hydraulic sense. If you already have a system, we can test it and tie in properly.
