Weeping sprinkler head repair starts with one question: does it stop, or does it keep going?

Water appearing when nothing is running has two very different explanations, and telling them apart takes about two minutes. If the water runs for a minute or two after a zone shuts down and then stops on its own, that is the pipe emptying itself and it is a hardware fix. If it keeps going all day, something upstream is not sealing and it is a repair.

The first case is what the trade calls low-head drainage. Every lateral holds water after a zone finishes, and on a sloped yard gravity walks that water down to the lowest head on the run and pushes it out. On flat ground nobody notices. On the rolling lots around Apex, Holly Springs and west Cary it produces a permanent soggy patch, and clay underneath means it never soaks away. It also pulls grit back into that head as it drains, which is why the low head on a slope is always the one clogging.

We diagnose and repair weeping irrigation across Cary, Raleigh, Apex, Morrisville, Holly Springs, Fuquay-Varina and Wake County — part of our irrigation repair service.

Why water shows up when nothing is running

Diagnosed right and fixed with genuine Hunter, Rain Bird & Toro parts.

Low-head drainage

The lateral empties through the lowest head after every cycle. It stops on its own within a couple of minutes. The fix is check valves — either heads with them built in or inline checks on the run — which hold the column of water in the pipe instead of dumping it on your lawn.

A zone valve not seating

Grit on the seat or a worn diaphragm lets water past continuously, so one zone trickles day and night. This one never stops on its own, which is how you tell it apart. See sprinkler valve repair.

A master valve not sealing

When the master valve fails to close, the mainline stays pressurised all week and every small imperfection downstream starts leaking. Fixing the weep means fixing the master valve first.

A cracked lateral holding pressure

A split pipe under a wet spot behaves differently from a draining head — the ground stays saturated between cycles and the area spreads. Usually needs locating before digging.

A blown head seal or cracked riser

Water pushing up around the body of a head rather than out of the nozzle. Common after a mower strike or a freeze that was not blown out properly.

Backflow relief discharge

An RPZ dumping from its relief port looks like a leak and is actually the assembly telling you a check valve is fouled. Different part, different fix, and worth ruling in early.

What you are actually seeing

  • A wet patch at the low point of the yard that never dries out
  • One head still running a minute after the zone shuts off
  • A valve box with standing water in it
  • Moss, algae or sunken turf in one spot
  • The water bill crept up with no change in schedule

How the work happens, step by step

No mystery, no runaround — here’s the order we work in.

Time it

We watch what happens after a zone shuts down. Water that stops within two minutes is drainage; water still moving twenty minutes later is a seal that is not sealing. That single observation decides everything that follows.

Isolate the zone

We work out which zone the water belongs to, because a wet spot is often fed by a run nobody suspects. Running zones one at a time tells us more than any amount of digging.

Check pressure upstream

If more than one zone weeps, the master valve or the mainline is the suspect rather than any individual valve. We test the mainline holds pressure with everything closed.

Fit the right fix

Check valves for drainage, a rebuild or replacement for a valve that will not seat, a pipe repair for a split. We tell you which one it is before anything comes apart.

I’m so glad I found Cary Sprinklers! Adam, the owner, is incredibly friendly, honest, and straightforward. He found several problems with our sprinkler system and was able to fix them for a very reasonable price. We had other companies come out who tried to upsell us on repairs costing thousands of dollars, so the difference was unbelievable. I have some experience in this field myself, so I know how to evaluate vendors and recognize when someone is being honest and when they’re simply trying to sell you more work. Adam was clearly focused on actually solving the problems rather than taking advantage of us. He saved us a tremendous amount of money, and we really appreciate it. Thank you so much, Adam, for your honesty, professionalism, and excellent work. Highly recommended!

This is the second time we have used Cary Sprinklers, and both times involved dirty digging and repairing complex leaks. The first was an underground valve leak and they put the dirt and our sod back as if it was their own home. The site around our second job by our backflow was also filled in nicely. Adam the owner, Matt the estimator, and Colby the irrigation magician were all great to work with. We think our irrigation in our box came apart when TOC main busted and the extreme pressure of 200+ psi was too much. Matt did a thorough job looking at our issue, answering all my questions about the possible TOC main break playing a part, and giving quote for the time he felt it would take. Keep in mind, this is the type of small business where you need to be flexible on the time of arrival since prior jobs may put them behind. With this said, the crew will spend all the time needed to repair the issue you have at your home and not rush to make things just good enough. They want to make sure the repair is done to your satisfaction. I texted Adam several times and he had a prompt response time. He was also prompt via email with a post work invoice question. We recommend supporting Cary Sprinklers for the reasons above and because this is a small business growing roots in our community.

Adam and Gerald showed up right on time and kept me updated with texts the night before and the day of with their ETA. I needed a new zone added for part of the yard that wasn’t getting enough water anymore, and they did a great job. Fair pricing, excellent communication, and very professional — I’m really happy with the result.

5 stars — Highly recommend Cary Sprinklers! We hired Cary Sprinklers to expand our existing irrigation system by extending one zone and adding a completely new zone. From the beginning, they were professional, knowledgeable, and very easy to work with. What really impressed us was the equipment and efficiency. They used a Toro Dingo to trench the new lines, which allowed them to get the work done quickly and professionally while keeping the disruption to our yard to a minimum. The crew clearly knew what they were doing, and the installation was done right. Adam took the time to explain what we needed and why, and the communication throughout the project was excellent. The new zones give us much better coverage of the property, and everything is working exactly as it should. We couldn’t be happier with the finished system. The whole process was smooth, and the work exceeded our expectations. We would definitely use Cary Sprinklers again.

Cary Sprinklers is amazing. Adam is professional, capable, and wonderful to do business with. We called him because we had trouble with our timer app and controller. It wasn’t a brand that he usually works with, but he figured it out and fixed it anyway. Additionally, his team did an amazing job removing this massive root to get a broken sprinkler out of the ground and replace it and even under budget! I’ve done business with a few sprinkler companies in my lifetime, and these guys are the best!! They are honest, reliable, and very detail oriented. You will not be sorry if you call Cary Sprinklers.

Why homeowners choose us

01

We separate drainage from a leak

Most of these calls are one of two things and they cost very different amounts. Getting that right in the first two minutes is the whole job, and it is where a lot of money gets wasted otherwise.

02

Check valves sized to the slope

A check valve holds a limited column of water. On a yard with real elevation change, putting them only in the bottom head does not work. We fit them where the run actually needs them.

03

Honest diagnosis and a guarantee

We test the actual parts before quoting and give upfront pricing with no surprises. Every repair is backed by a 100% satisfaction guarantee and a 12-month workmanship warranty.

Weeping sprinkler head repair FAQ

Why does one sprinkler head keep running after the zone shuts off?

That is low-head drainage. The water left in that zone’s pipe runs downhill and out through the lowest head on the run. It is normal physics rather than a fault, but it wastes water and makes a permanent wet spot, and check valves stop it.

How do I tell a leak from normal drainage?

Time it. Drainage stops on its own within a minute or two of the zone finishing. A leak keeps going — hours later there is still water moving. If you are not sure, watch the spot two hours after the system has run.

Will check valves fix any weeping sprinkler?

Only the drainage kind. If a valve is not seating or a pipe is split, check valves do nothing and you have paid for the wrong repair. That is why we time it before we quote.

Is a wet spot in the lawn always the sprinklers?

No. Standing water can be a grading or runoff problem that has nothing to do with irrigation, which is a different service entirely. We check whether the spot dries out when the system is switched off for a few days.
