Valve boxes go missing for ordinary reasons. Sod creeps over the lid a little more each season, a landscaper adds two inches of mulch, a patio or a bed goes in on top, or the builder never brought the box up to grade in the first place. Then a zone fails, and the repair cannot start until somebody finds the valve.
The wrong way to find it is to guess and dig. Blind trenching in the general area is how mainlines get cut, wiring gets nicked, and a one-hour repair turns into a day. We connect a transmitter to that zone’s wire and common at the controller, energise the solenoid with a signal, and follow the wire with a receiver until it peaks directly over the valve. The box gets opened where the valve actually is, not where it seemed like it should be.

Sodded or mulched over
The most common one by far. Turf closes over a lid in two or three seasons and pine straw hides it in one. The valve is fine, nobody can reach it.
Buried by new landscaping
A bed, a walkway or a patio went in over a valve box. Locating tells you exactly what is under there before anyone lifts a paver or cuts into a bed.
A house you just bought

How the work happens, step by step

Start at the controller
We identify which zone we are chasing and confirm the wiring for it is intact. A locate needs a circuit to energise, so a broken wire changes the approach and we want to know that before we walk the yard.
Energise and trace
A transmitter puts a signal on that zone’s wire. We follow it with a receiver across the yard, and the signal peaks over the solenoid rather than anywhere along the run.
Confirm before we cut
We mark the spot, verify with a probe, and open a small clean hole rather than a trench. If it is not there, we re-trace instead of widening the hole.
Bring it to grade and map it
The box gets reset level with the lawn, and you get the locations recorded so the next repair starts with knowledge instead of a search.

Can you find a valve if the wire to it is broken?
It is harder, because the usual method needs a live circuit to energise the solenoid. When the wire is cut we trace the run to the break, then work from there. Often finding the break and finding the valve turn out to be the same job.
Why not just dig where the valve should be?
Because valves are rarely where they should be. Installers put them where the trenching went, not where a plan says. Exploratory digging damages mainlines and wiring, and repairing that costs more than locating properly.
How long does locating a valve take?
Most single valves are found within the hour once we are at the controller. A full system with several missing boxes takes longer, and mapping the whole thing at once is usually cheaper than locating them one at a time over several visits.
