Weeping sprinkler head repair starts with one question: does it stop, or does it keep going?
Water appearing when nothing is running has two very different explanations, and telling them apart takes about two minutes. If the water runs for a minute or two after a zone shuts down and then stops on its own, that is the pipe emptying itself and it is a hardware fix. If it keeps going all day, something upstream is not sealing and it is a repair.
The first case is what the trade calls low-head drainage. Every lateral holds water after a zone finishes, and on a sloped yard gravity walks that water down to the lowest head on the run and pushes it out. On flat ground nobody notices. Low-head drainage
The lateral empties through the lowest head after every cycle. It stops on its own within a couple of minutes. The fix is check valves — either heads with them built in or inline checks on the run — which hold the column of water in the pipe instead of dumping it on your lawn.
A zone valve not seating
Grit on the seat or a worn diaphragm lets water past continuously, so one zone trickles day and night. This one never stops on its own, which is how you tell it apart. See sprinkler valve repair.
A master valve not sealing
When the master valve fails to close, the mainline stays pressurised all week and every small imperfection downstream starts leaking. Fixing the weep means fixing the master valve first.
A cracked lateral holding pressure
A split pipe under a wet spot behaves differently from a draining head — the ground stays saturated between cycles and the area spreads. Usually needs locating before digging.
A blown head seal or cracked riser
Water pushing up around the body of a head rather than out of the nozzle. Common after a mower strike or a freeze that was not blown out properly.
Backflow relief discharge
An RPZ dumping from its relief port looks like a leak and is actually the assembly telling you a check valve is fouled. Different part, different fix, and worth ruling in early.

Why does one sprinkler head keep running after the zone shuts off?
That is low-head drainage. The water left in that zone’s pipe runs downhill and out through the lowest head on the run. It is normal physics rather than a fault, but it wastes water and makes a permanent wet spot, and check valves stop it.
How do I tell a leak from normal drainage?
Time it. Drainage stops on its own within a minute or two of the zone finishing. A leak keeps going — hours later there is still water moving. If you are not sure, watch the spot two hours after the system has run.
Will check valves fix any weeping sprinkler?
Only the drainage kind. If a valve is not seating or a pipe is split, check valves do nothing and you have paid for the wrong repair. That is why we time it before we quote.
Is a wet spot in the lawn always the sprinklers?
No. Standing water can be a grading or runoff problem that has nothing to do with irrigation, which is a different service entirely. We check whether the spot dries out when the system is switched off for a few days.
